
The Key Principles of Pilates
Breathing
Using breathing cycles during Pilates is essential. Breathing is coordinated with each exercise so that the exhalation occurs during the movement which is most exerting. This optimises core stability and provides support for the spine (see my blog on Pilates Breathing for more info).
Concentration
Pilates is a workout for the mind and body. Concentration is key for every exercise to promote the correct alignment and body awareness. This concentration not only enhances the quality of the movement but also creates mindfulness by being present in the moment by focusing on yourself.
Control
During mat-based pilates, movement control is challenged by working against gravity. During reformer pilates, control is challenged by the resistance of the equipment.
Centering
Centering refers to engaging your core stability muscles. Pilates exercises primarily facilitate core stability and then challenge this through various movements with your arms and legs.
Precision
Greater precision with movement leads to greater body awareness and control. Every exercise involves precision, length and finished lines right from your fingers to your toes. In Pilates we focus on your alignment and precision throughout your entire body, especially focusing on the placement of your pelvis, ribcage and spine.
Flow
Pilates exercises are performed through continuously flowing through movements, following natural breathing cycles.
Integrated isolation
This refers to the goal of integrating the muscles and joints into a movement, while isolating it from harmful stress. When performing pilates exercises, the goal is to gradually increase the stress/demand on a particular joint or muscle to make it stronger. By practising Pilates, you improve your body and mind awareness which in turn improves your ability to recognise incorrect movement patterns, then isolate and correct them to optimise function and avoid harm.
Routine
Routine and repetition in Pilates follows the well-known mantra of practise makes perfect! Repetition of exercises leads to improved ability, greater skills and greater benefits.
